Tourism with balneotherapy
Since the 5th century B.C. Bulgaria was famous for its healing mineral waters.
The Roman emperors used to come and stay for treatment in the ancient Bulgarian health centers of Augusta
and Pautalia. |
Balneology (term coming from the Latin word bath) is nowadays a part of the Medicine that investigates
the origin and the physico - chemical properties of mineral waters and their medical indications in
internal and external usage.
Bulgaria has more than 500 different sources of mineral waters, specific favourable climate - two
different climatic zones: sea and mountainous, magnificent nature and old - world traditions. This
combination set up unique conditions for balneotherapy and climatic therapy, that means successful
prophylaxis, rehabilitation and treating of a lot of diseases.
Bulgarian balneo - resorts offer accommodation in 3 to 5 stars hotels and a built up structure of
Health Centers, controlled by the Ministry of Health.
- The Bulgarian mineral waters possess an exceptionally great variety of chemical components; combined
with their natural minerals, healing gasses and biologically active microelements, so that they become
unique in their kind in the world. Practically on this country's territory almost all the existing
kinds of mineral waters in the nature can be found.
- The advantage of the Bulgarian hypotherapy resorts is the situation in areas with extremely
favourable climate conditions, which gives the unique chance of combining balneotherapy with climate
therapy.
- The spas situated in the mountains offer therapy, and prophylaxis all the year round especially for
respiratory, lungs, cardiovascular and endocrine diseases. The mountainous area in Bulgaria reaches
the altitude of 3000 m that means it include the typical average mountains zone (1000 - 2000 m) which
is the most important one in climatotherapy. Bulgarian mountain resorts' main advantage is not only
the fresh air but also the short wave ultraviolet radiation and the negative aero - ionization,
especially with different temperature and composition.
- The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast is characterized by Mediterranean climate. It has neither the cool of
the Northern European seacoast, nor the heat of the South Mediterranean. The wide sand strip which is
378 km in length, gradually descending towards the sea is famous for its fine sand, comparative
shallowness at the beach, bright sun and its gentle pleasant breeze. The specific moderate climate,
combined with the therapeutic mineral water sources and the healing mud of the Bulgarian Black Sea
Coast, gives perfect opportunity for treatment and recreation.
- The world - famous balneological centers are found in the resorts of Riviera, St.Konstantin and Elena,
Albena, Hissaria, Sandanski, Velingrad.
